For my first Fall 2025 Artisanal Intelligence post about teaching and writing with AI, I focus on mental health, ChatGPT's attempts to get me into a relationship, and a concerning interaction I witnessed with a student. open.substack.com/pub/lizalong...

It absolutely makes sense that men are using AI more and seeing more job benefits, because confidently spouting nonsense in the shape of information (what LLMs are programmed to do) has always been much more of a pathway for career advancement for men than for others.
Every. Single. Story. about women not using AI as much as men portray it as bad for their future career prospects (without a shred of evidence) and a result of women being fearful little ladies rather than looking at AI's output and saying "this sucks, it's not going to help me."
For women, the increase of AI use in the workplace may affect their careers: Harvard study
Women are using AI significantly less then men and it’s going to have a major impact on their careers, according to extensive research on the topic.

The battle over the 10-year moratorium on state AI laws is at fever pitch ahead of a crucial Senate vote that could hinge on just a handful of Republican swing votes.

My piece today on one of the most consequential & convoluted tech policy fights in years: www.washingtonpost.com/politics/202...
Analysis | Republicans’ bid to stop state AI laws heads for a crucial vote
A 10-year moratorium on state AI regulations cleared a huge hurdle after Cruz narrowed its language. Its fate may now hinge on a handful of GOP skeptics.

Sometimes you just need to complain about ChatGPT and Claude is the best option. In this post, I share a “conversation” I had with Claude about AI, ed tech, and the future of higher education (if reading chatbot outputs isn’t your thing, scroll right on by!) lizalong.substack.com/p/in-which-c...

I finally had time to configure a Latin tutoring bot. VeniVidiVici is designed to limit practice sessions to 20-30 minutes, and it's really fun! It provides hints and suggestions to improve or correct grammar and syntax errors, for beginner through advanced learners. g.co/gemini/share...

This. Every word. (Also, there’s a provision in the “big beautiful bill” that would make state regulation of AI illegal for 10 years so….)
My new syllabus policy for summer classes takes a similar approach (it's like a recipe blog--you have to scroll down for the good stuff): open.substack.com/pub/lizalong...

I did this for my literary analysis classes as well—we had ChatGPT “write” the analysis, then annotated it.

So far the most effective way I've found to get students to not use ChatGPT is to say, "you can use it if you want to; if you do, here is the list of things you should do to make sure that it doesn't embarrass you" & then have them write a reflection about their choice

The big winner in the dismantling of American scientific research is of course going to be China.

They were already filing more patents than the U.S. and this trend will now only accelerate.

These patents have a direct correlation to a nation’s future prosperity. @carlquintanilla.bsky.social
It's the last day of #NationalPoetryMonth, and you know what that means! Time to collaborate with ChatGPT on some poetry! Last year's was definitely more fun. But this year, ChatGPT 4.5 tackled some interesting challenges with form, meter, and style. lizalong.substack.com/p/with-apolo...
