Climb to the sun.
Your frozen boughs
Shimmer across the sky.

Your work is done.
Decades digging roots
Deep
In unforgiving soil.

Shine on, wild one.

Of grit and grace.

Right after I graduated (May 2022) IU started doing crazy stuff like this... I have never set foot on campus (I was completely online), and yet I am embarrassed by this.
Something strange is happening at Indiana University...

The school removed its respected director of its renowned Jewish studies program without explanation and replaced him with a professor focused on contemporary antisemitism known for vocally supporting Israel. 🧵

How turmoil at Indiana University's prestigious Jewish studies program has exposed the tensions plaguing those studying Jews and Judaism.

Can you get there reading only recent YA fiction? I don’t know. I don’t think that’ll help you get better at Brontë or Shakespeare or Paul Muldoon. I think a teacher’s job is at least in part to put challenges in the students’ paths. It helps if the teacher enjoys (and gets) the hard stuff too. (/7)

One of the things I wind up telling college students (bear with me) is that although they are fluent readers of English, their reading skills have not stopped improving. If they keep reading things that challenge them, they will be better readers from year to year.

Part of what improves is … (1/7)
1. We shd ask HS students to read old books. Some love them. Many learn. 2. No book fits all readers. 3. Old language more often alienates young readers. 4. Where possible HS & intro college English classes can mix old & new books. 5. Alas, that means short books.... but it also means poems!
One might even argue that the Scarlet Letter not being for you is a life lesson.

If they can do it to Shakespeare...

I remember reading about a production of Zauberfloete in which QotN was Harriet Tubman, Sarastro was a slave owner, etc., to subvert the original (sexist, racist) messages of the opera.

But people didn't quite get it and got mad, understandably.
At what point does an opera become a bait and switch? What do you think? 🤔

Let me know in the comments. And don’t forget to order a copy of OPERA WARS, coming January 13!

I think I'm a moderate opera lover. But then again, I CHOSE to turn on the Met when I got back from a conference in my hotel room and watched Barber of Seville for 3 hours, so maybe not

This ticks off all my boxes: music, history, public interpretation, religion (I would bet)
