Smithsonian Folklife just released an oral history interviewing guide for people who want to interview family members, neighbours, and friends about the history, culture, and tradition they bear. Here's hoping this sort of conversation finds its way around your Thanksgiving table. #folklore

I bought this beautiful version of Tam Lin at the Abbotsford book store in Scotland because I just couldn't stop looking at the illustrations. Here are a few favourites.

Finally made those Swedish cardamom buns I dreamed about a few months ago. I've never had them, but they turned out beautifully.

Have you ever just wanted someone to leave a plate of garlic bread and a pot of tea at your desk because Winter Is Coming, and it's all you want to eat, but you need to keep working?

Yeah, me neither.

It strikes me that quite a bit of racism (esp. the Pagan variety) springs out of hyper-focus on an imagined past. I prefer to imagine the future, one where we all survive the climate crisis and thrive together in respect for one another and reverence for the Earth.

I'm probably a little crazy for believing that animism, ritual, and art can help save humanity. But I like my kind of crazy.

I'm home. I'll be catching up on laundry, journalling, and correspondence today, and then I'll be back at my desk and back at work on the book and forthcoming courses on Wednesday. Of note, I'll also be returning to work on the next EP. The lyrics are written, but I haven't touched the music yet.

Serena was my handmaiden during the High Seat, as I was veiled and couldn't see. This is her account of the experience. Mine will come later. However, as I write this from the Starbucks in the Glasgow airport, I can say that I think we need more ceremonies like this one.

After I post your photo of the day, I’ll be packing my suitcase. It’s been an extraordinary journey, and Kinnell Stone Circle was my last stop in the Highlands.

I have to say, rural Scotland does a much better job than Cape Breton when it comes to providing vegan options. I’m at a coffee house in Killin, and there’s a soup, sandwich and cake option for me, plus oat milk for my coffee!

Your photo of the day comes with a bit of Scottish ethnomusicology. This is Loch Lomond, and the Jacobite folk song famously associated with it speaks of one soldier's return home alive via the "high road" and another soldier's return home via the "low road" of death.

Your photos of the day come from my love of the English and Scottish ballad tradition. I've done quite a bit of academic and artistic work with these songs over the years, so I had to visit the places where some of them are set. I've added commentary to the individual alt text captions.

Your photo of the day is two: the ruins of the old Rossdhu House and the rebuilt Rossdhu House, the traditional seat of Clan Colquhoun in Luss. As a member of the clan with family ties through my maternal grandfather, I had the opportunity to take a private tour and appreciated it very much.

Today’s photo of the day is the ancient, pre-Christian face in the rock carved at Dunino Den. If you look closely, you’ll see contemporary offerings in the rock below and around the face. All of these are material culture, and I have strong opinions about them, which I will share at another time.

I'm settled in my Scottish cottage watching sweet potatoes bake while I catch up on correspondence. Today's photos are of the cottage and my view from the front door.

Your photo of the day is the Treehouse at the Clophill Centre, where I rested, meditated, and prepared for tonight’s ceremony by a tiny wood stove as the sun set over the English hillside.

Today's photo was taken at the beginning of the Shapeshifting Stories panel I moderated at WFC this afternoon. We had a great discussion!

Your photo of the day is the only one I took. The World Fantasy Convention has begun, and I've been catching up with friends. It's the mural on the wall of Bonsai Plant Kitchen, where I ate an excellent vegan meal. I could spin this as folklore of foodways, and it is, but I'm out of steam. G'night.

Today’s photos are early, as I’m staying in to rest, journal, and finish the notes for my WFC panel. I stopped into a coffee shop near the waterfront after my morning swim, and a brave little pigeon wandered in looking for breakfast. She was gently treated by everyone there, and it made me happy.

I couldn’t decide between these two for your photo of the day, so I’m giving you both. One is a Big Ben as seen from my taxi. The second is the view from The Old Photographic Studio in Brighton. Built in the 1840s, it was once used by the royal family, and it’s where I’m staying this week.
