Thread on solving the 90-in-180 day problem 🧵

The solutions to the 90-in-180 day problem are many and varied. Politicians really have **no** excuse for inaction.

Any of the following provide models for solutions or are solutions in themselves…

What do you want to do about it now? Have the Irish language replace English? Tell young British people that they can’t live in Northern Ireland anymore?

How is England or the UK oppressing Northern Ireland today?

How far do you want to roll things back? Vikings? Normans? Romans?

Of course illegal immigration shouldn’t be tolerated.

It isn’t.

That’s why it’s illegal.

But much of the immigration people think is illegal is actually entirely legal.

Why not? If the goal is to find compromise it’s a good idea to understand everyone’s perspective. This should have happened before triggering article 50, too, I think.

I understand “EU reality”. But it’s led to stalemate. Little has changed in 5 years.

It’s foolish to keep doing the same thing and keep expecting different results.

Time to try a new way to reach agreement.

Of course. You find ways to limp on, don’t you? Ways around things. And you try to find ways to profit from the tragedy too.
EU firms realigned supply chains very quickly.

Ireland benefitted enormously with new direct sea routes, bypassing britain, to the EU SM.

For brits in the EU or others looking for a bespoke deal, the urgency is not on the EU side.

This is not true btw👇the EU is moving away from bespoke deals.

6. I’ll gladly consider distributing an adapted and white labelled version after some editing to the open source version, as was originally agreed before you published it.

As I’ve said before, it’s a good piece of work that needs a little more finessing to be useful.

I don’t know what more I can do and suspect whatever I do will not meet your approval.

Perhaps you might spend less time criticising others.

3. It’s rude to distribute materials like this at someone else’s event when attending as a guest without first getting agreement to do so. Unless you have since edited it significantly the tone and register of the book is not appropriate for the events I’ve attended.

1. I’m not in a position to pay for copies of your book (despite contributing to it). You need to find a way to crowdsource the cost so they are free

2. I’ve told you that it needs an edit (in my opinion) before I can distribute it to my audiences.

Yeah.

Freedom of Movement is mutual mobility within a finite area for a finite number of people. I don’t really think of that as immigration at all. I doubt many leave voters do either.

It’s just redefining what home means.

84% of Brits support mutual Freedom of Movement anyway.

Yes.

I’m not worried about that though, because once an application to rejoin has been made it means the country is in a very different place anyway.

I can’t imagine an application being made anyway until UK gov is reasonably sure it will not face vetoes.

Either way, intent is important.

I know what you mean but I suspect the “supposed remainers” who say this rubbish are just Brexilers or Brexpellers angry with UK, obsessed about <<exceptionalism that isn’t exceptionalism>>. Bitter EU citizens. Or even Brexiters in disguise. Sadly they infect others though.

So good to point out.

No. I’m saying if we have to pay, we should be given EU membership in return.

If we only have a trade deal then we shouldn’t pay.

Who wants a trade deal? We should have membership.

No you’re wrong there.

You’re projecting YOUR own idea of what the EU is into other people and nations.

The EU is the sum of its members and their hopes and ambitions. Including those who have a different idea of what cooperation and unity mean.

How can the EU have agency at the same time as being constrained by treaties?

You can’t use the excuse that it is constrained by its own rules and also pretend it has complete agency.

Both can’t be true.
