A unique Reclining Vishnu and birth of Brahma lintel incorporating the Sapta Matrikas or 7 Divine Mothers from Hindu mythology, otherwise unknown in #Cambodia. 11th century sandstone lintel repatriated from the USA-Lindemann collection in 2024.

Preah Vihear temple, #Cambodia. The northern entrance to the mandapa of the central sanctuary. The pediment of dancing Shiva and lintel have been destroyed after heavy shelling by Thailand’s military deliberately targeted this UNESCO world heritage site.

Positive news for #Cambodia with the Smithsonian’s Asian Art Museum in Washington DC announcing the return of 3 Khmer artworks to Cambodia, and San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum doing the same for 13 pieces. Once looted but now coming home.

Prasat Ta Krabey, an 11/12th century temple, has been shelled and virtually demolished by Thailand’s military attacks over the past 2 days, as hostilities between Cambodia and Thailand ramp up. Targeting cultural property is heinous.

The torch is still alight inside the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh this evening, after yesterday’s anniversary of #Cambodia’s Independence Day from France, dating back to 9 Nov 1953. It was lit by the king yesterday and will be extinguished tomorrow.

This 7th century sandstone linga was found buried in 2017 as Prasat Baset in Battambang, #Cambodia was undergoing renovation. Now at the Battambang Museum, surrounded by other artifacts from the same temple.
