If you were to design society from scratch, behind the veil of ignorance, would you choose to have social media? If you didn’t know whether you’d be an influencer with 10 million followers, or someone whose mental health is destroyed? hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/rawls-and-...

I am making a case for building and defending universities in a world that is requiring a defensive and forward-thinking posture. There are many wolves at the doors of academia, Academics need to be building brick houses, not dismantling them. hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/the-academ...

AI is a logic machine that recognizes the logic of power. AI is not itself the master, but a tool for mastering reality, if one uses it for that rather than for aphoristic pleasure. hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/the-academ...

“Students’ reluctance to perform controversial viewpoints in public settings may reflect a paradigm shift that meaningful engagement with controversial ideas requires privacy and reflection. AI may deliver all this far more fruitfully than the performative classroom discussions that FIRE champions”

When you have walk-in advising, you don’t notice the loss of faculty mentors. When you have affinity groups, you don’t notice that all of your courses and assignments are beginning to look the same. hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/is-embraci...

Claude can ace any online asynchronous course where there is minimum human interaction. This is the Claude test: if Claude can pass it easily, so can students, using Claude. hollisrobbinsanecdotal.substack.com/p/the-claude...

At a former institution when I became dean I learned there was no celebration for faculty books so I found enough $ in couch cushions for a hall of fame, several dozen faculty books covers over a decade, blown up poster size, mounted, and framed. The laid off faculty took them home, I just learned.
