On the way back from REBOUND project meeting on just #greentransition in the #Arctic. It's almost the peak of darkness here in the North, a tranquil period reminding us of Arctic fragility.

It is just completely implausible to me that the data center power rush isn't coming with systematic violations of air pollution laws. Time to bring back the militant state clean-air enforcement of the mid-20th century. Shut them down and prosecute them.
honestly what are we doing here folks

Back from #TICCIH industrial heritage congress in #Kiruna, Swedish Lapland. The town's rebuilding due to the mine's expansion gives so much food for thought. Photo: Kiruna church, moved to the new center just 10 days ago.

We are hiring a new PhD student in the history group @unistavanger.bsky.social. There are several possible topics, including «Intersections between history education and education for sustainable development/environmental citizenship», which should be interesting for the #envhist #envhum crowd.

Truly enjoyed a visit to the museum of the Hungarian artist Tivadar Csontváry in Pécs today (part of my weekend program during the research stay!). Here is Csontvary's painting "Jajce power plant at night".

Eudaimonia lecture 2025 by Krithika Srinivasan (U Edinburgh) "Nature without #Conservation" @unioulu.bsky.social: on #wilderness and #care, (un)wanted companions and lessons for #cohabitation. Krithika suggests moving beyond care in conservation, although I would also keep rethinking care.

An important topic I hope to contribute to someday (though ironically, with two small kids, I never have time to reflect 😅)
I have a new piece coming out with @chronicle.com on the problem of pregnancy in academia. a sneak peek:

“an academic I spoke with told me a prof looked at his pregnant advisee & sneered, ‘once could be construed as an accident. it now looks like you’re doing this on purpose’”

Raspberry quartzite – a unique stone extracted only from a quarry near the village of Shoksha in northwest Russia. It was used in the construction of Napoleon's tomb and Lenin's Mausoleum. This is the stone that started my PhD research ten years ago.
