Since many more people have come to #Bluesky lately, I though it might be fun to share my publications on here, as well! (And as I'm still ECR, it's a reasonable number). Most are on #StormPetrels, but I do have some cool ones on #Whimbrel as well, and even a co-authorship on #PiedFlycatcher. #bird

We only have 5 days left before the last of our team leaves the #FaroeIslands, but these chicks still have some growing to do!

One of the challenges of working with European #stormpetrels on the #FaroeIslands is that they don't really synchronise anything... These two chicks were weighed 5 minutes apart! @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @trevormaclaurin.bsky.social

Neither of these chicks will likely fledge before we have to head out, after having spent almost 90 days in the Faroe Islands! The young chick on these photos is 5 - 7 days old (we don't check daily) while the older one is 45 - 46 days old. We also still have two eggs remaining!

Seems like our ScienceBricks to monitor attendance of burrow nesting seabirds should help with at least some of these challenges! @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @robthomasbirds.bsky.social

🚨 New #seabirds paper 🚨

Following a workshop at the International Seabird Group Conference 2024 & led by @seabirdmortenf.bsky.social, we review opportunities & challenges for new technologies in seabird monitoring 🎥💻🐣

Opportunities and challenges for new technologies in seabird population monitoring
Abstract. Monitoring of seabird population size and demography has for decades relied on observer-based methods. While such methods have allowed the accumu

That's a much more intricate version of The Stick that we use here (until @jasonwalczak.bsky.social's Science Bricks are perfected and deployed across the colony, ofc.)!

Easy to weigh them in, easy to pack (they fold!), and easy to wipe clean. And very, very cute.

Although most breeding #seabird fieldwork in the North Atlantic has come to an end, we're still in the thick of it with 12/56 eggs hatched! #SeabirdSeptember @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @trevormaclaurin.bsky.social @felixazurawska.bsky.social @bardseyben.bsky.social

I'd like to say I made a new friend today but this -very fat- #fulmar chick didn't really love being picked up from the road and released back to the ocean where it belongs... My hands will forever smell. @jasonwalczak.bsky.social @annaznoj.bsky.social

The BOU being so on it they beat me to posting about our own paper!

Any folk interested in using bioacoustics to monitor petrels/ #seabirds do get in touch- we're continuing this work at @btoscotland.bsky.social and always keen for more collaborations in this emerging field
