in most of the films that still foreground those - i.e. 'popcorn' horror - they tend to be relatively expensive jump-scares. I'm ok with them, just so long as they are a means rather than the end

Always found the notion that horror should definitionally be 'scary' an odd one, because by that standard, so few films qualify as horror, unless you're 12 years old or under. My personal preference is for 'disorienting', 'unsettling' and 'upsetting', and none of those actually require scares.
