If you’ve been directly impacted by a pause or cancellation of an NIH study session, we @forbes.com would like to talk to you
All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

Our miRNA story is now in @science.org ! We found a microRNA, not a protein, that finally solved a long-standing evolutionary mystery of wing coloration in butterflies and moths. (1/n)

A microRNA is the effector gene of a classic evolutionary hotspot locus
In Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths), the genomic region around the gene cortex is a “hotspot” locus, repeatedly implicated in generating intraspecific melanic wing color polymorphisms across 100 mi...

🧪🦋🧬 Delving into the genetic coding of butterfly wings, we've found 'sketcher' and 'paint' genes. Now, a 'contrast' locus has emerged. Three labs have study a locus housing an lncRNA called 'ivory' and a miRNA involve in fine-tuning melanic pigmentation 🔥🔥🔥 check preprints 👇🏽🧪

We discovered a #TAD boundary element between the #HOX genes Antp and Ubx. By disturbing this element genetically #CRISPR, we could observe a change in the expression of Ubx. This caused the 🦋 forewing to resemble a hindwing not only in color pattern but also in shape. So COOL 🔥🔥
By forming a TAD! Re-analyzing HiC and ATACseq data from the James Lewis and Bob Reed Labs, Anyi Mazo-Vargas and Amruta Tendolkar found that Ubx appears to be insulated from Antp by 3D genome organization. Green peaks : Chromatin is differentially opened in the hindwing tissues around Ubx.
