That argument sounds smart because it’s tidy. But it’s also irrelevant. We’re not living in 1995. Or 2013. Or 2019. The game board has changed, the rules have changed, and most of all, Trump has changed what “governing” even means.

Every pundit with a Sun Tzu quote in their pocket thinks they’ve solved the shutdown dilemma. They rattle off the same history lesson: Gingrich lost to Clinton in ’95. The Tea Party got smoked in 2013. Trump’s border wall tantrum collapsed in 2019.

Israeli Jews? They’re the ones who didn’t make the cut. The doors closed. They went through the Holocaust. They faced pro-Nazi regimes in Iraq and across the Arab world.

That’s the fork in the road. American Jews were saved by liberalism. Israeli Jews had no such luxury.

American Jews got here early—fleeing pogroms, collapsing empires, antisemitic laws. They arrived before the immigration gates slammed shut in the 1920s. And then they hit the jackpot: liberal democracy.
