Tbh, I don’t. It’s central government that needs to get better at letting go of real power & trust local leaders in full ✔️
It also seems to me that this statement essentially contradicts what AR said later about “ending the begging bowl culture” 🤷🏻‍♀️

Good piece, as ever, from @craigpberry.bsky.social on English Devo White Paper (and what’s missing in it) 👇🏽

Can you have real devolution (which should be abt bringing politics closer to people)while taking the local out of local gov?
Local governance in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is undoubtedly a complicated affair, but local gov size is already well above Eu average - not sure making it even bigger is the solution to the problem…

a special thank-you to @profcatdurose.bsky.social & @peckersley.bsky.social for their support throughout the publication process, and for being just the way they are (i.e. amazing editors, brilliant scholars & super lovely colleagues) 🤓

Looks very much like ministers want to use the lure of MCAs to drive local government reorganisation. Which was always Hezza's aim (and no one ever described him as believing in building devolution from the ground up) cc @swannphil.bsky.social

✨Another brilliant article included in @LGStudies 50th anniversary special issue

🎯@sandfordm3 discusses what happened to local gov academics & research centres - and how/why fewer of them means there’s now a gap in reps of sector in relevant debates among policy-makers/making

Hint: if you want to address the chaos of LG (in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 AND 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿), maybe the starting point should be to focus on the way in which govmt(s) devise devo & multilevel governance, as well as the nature of centre-local relations?
ariannagiovannini.bsky.social
Also: English devo/mayoral model is far from perfect. Still lots of disparities in approaches, powers, funding & views on MMs across country. And many areas don’t have/want MMs.

So is it wise to call for the adoption of a model that is still developing & has clear flaws?
