The story just could not enable good characterization for us to care for them,
no bits of background lore shown or hinted were good enough

True, there are good things in this series but is immediately soured by bad things, the total lack of pacing, cohesion, zero strategic sequencing in battles, and characterization of the main 3!! they all failed to do.

But hey, at least they could advertise their gunplas from it.

Few months ago, I was so hyped getting into Gundam Gquuuuux knowing Char was part of that series. Post episode 2 I was super positive that this series would go well, but it didn't.
It lacked so much of what makes a gundam story captivating, worth telling.
It was so soured by many things sadly.
