Pausing grants means pausing support for VICTIMS of crime -- the vast majority of victim witness staff are funded by grants. It pauses support for health care and mental health care -- like co-responder models that have saved the lives of community members and police officers alike.
I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

As the chief law enforcement officer of my community, I have some thoughts about the Laken Riley Act. We should not be using a tragedy to diminish safety and justice.
