Jessica Dismorr's Self Portrait sold for £152,800 - a new auction record for the artist - in the recent Bonhams online auction "Blazing a Trail: Modern British Women." The presale estimate was £15,000–£20,000.

In the event, Dod Procter's evocative painting "Girl in her Petticoat" was the standout of the Bonhams online auction "Blazing a Trail: Modern British Women." It soared past its estimate of £15,000–£25,000 to achieve a result of £406,800 - a new auction record for the artist.

Tal día como hoy 9 de octubre de 1830 nació la escultora estadounidense Harriet Hosmer
Fue la segunda hija del matrimonio formado por el médico Hiram Hosmer y Sarah Watson Grant. Su madre falleció de tuberculosis, cuando ella tenía sólo cinco años. Su hermana mayor, Sarah Helen falleció con 11 años por la misma enfermedad así como sus dos hermanos varones. Manos juntas de Robert y Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1853

Esta tragedia familiar hizo que su padre animara a Harriet a robustecer su forma física con el ejercicio de actividades deportivas al aire libre, como natación, equitación, remo o patinaje. Este tipo de prácticas enérgicas, que no eran comunes entre la población femenina del s. XIX por los prejuicios machistas de la sociedad victoriana, estimularon en la artista un sentido de fortaleza e independencia. El fauno dormido, c. 1870

En el mes de noviembre de 1852, cuando contaba 22 años, Harriet se trasladó a Roma con su padre para formarse en el estudio del escultor galés John Gibson discípulo de Antonio Canova. En Roma formó parte del numeroso grupo de escultoras estadounidenses grupo satirizado por el novelista Henry James como la "banda blanca marmórea". Beatrice Cenci, 1857

Harriet Hosmer nunca contrajo matrimonio y estuvo unida en una relación sentimental con la aristócrata y coleccionista de arte escocesa Louise Baring conocida como Lady Ashburton, quien fue su mecenas.
Falleció  en su ciudad natal, el 21 de febrero de 1908 a los 77 años.

Fue profesora de arte en varios centros públicos de Nueva York y, durante su época como docente, realizó una serie de pinturas titulada Personas Americanas (American People, en inglés), una de sus obras más conocidas, que representa la defensa de los derechos civiles desde un punto de vista feminista. Como ferviente activista por los derechos civiles y la igualdad de género, Faith Ringgold ha producido una obra intrínsecamente política. A principios de la década de 1970, abandonó los óleos tradicionales para pintar en acrílico sobre lienzos sin estirar con bordes de tela, una técnica que imita los thangkas tibetanos (pinturas de seda con bordados). Paralelamente empezó a trabajar en la colección Black America, también llamada Black Light Series, en la que experimentó con colores más oscuros. Esta idea nació tras la observación de que “el arte occidental blanco estaba centrado en el color blanco y en el juego de luz, contraste y claroscuro, mientras que en las culturas africanas, en general, se usaban colores más oscuros, enfatizando más en la tonalidad para crear contraste”.  Hizo una serie de multipaneles donde trató las verdades y los mitos de modernismo. Como Francia era el núcleo del arte moderno en ese momento, también se convirtió en la fuente principal de inspiración para que artistas de origen afroamericano encontraran su propia identidad "moderna".
Falleció 13 de abril de 2024  a los 93 años.
