“Hey there, champ!”

Text appeared on-screen, along with the sound effect of when you hit a block as Small Mario. Lucas’ eyes widened in surprise and excitement. Was the game talking to him? A thought that would be too silly, but he genuinely thought it was.

“Got quite the keen eye there! Always trying to find something, ‘eh?” Mario turned to look over at Lucas, directly making eye contact with him. He waved to Lucas through flipping the tiles that make up one of his arms to give the impression of one. “Now isn’t that super? I tell ya, I’m not easily impressed but you’ve caught my eye.“

“Tell ya what, champ…” Mario pondered a bit, crossing his arms and placing a hand on his chin in thought. And he looked back over at Lucas, a pixel added to his mustache to seem like he was smiling. “There’s a whole new adventure for me here, but I need your help! Need ya to come a little closer though, this is a secret between you and me.”

Lucas, having already formed an attachment to Mario, obliged and scooted closer to the TV. Ignoring how his parents had warned him about standing so close to the TV, placing more trust on a video game character than his own family. “Good! Now, I need you to stare at the screen. Look into the colorful lights, and don’t look away. Got it?”
