We’ve chosen John Armstrong’s Dreaming Head (1938, tempera on wood, Tate). Though he distanced himself from Surrealism, he drew on dreams and subconscious memory. Quiet, uncanny, poised between sleep and waking.

In this video, Art UK visits the Wardlaw Museum to view the ‘From These Parts: Scotland, Art and Identity’ exhibition. This exhibition celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Harry and Margery Boswell Collection at the University of St Andrews, and the 200th anniversary of the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture, Edinburgh. Assistant Curator Struan Watson examines the work of Mhairi Killin and John Duncan Fergusson, tracing how Scottish identity extends beyond place and borders.
