On display in Experience Barnsley are chest expanders, made by Sandow's and sold in the early twentieth century.

They belonged to Arthur Jepson who was the Mayor of Barnsley in 1944 (which probably came in handy with all the chains he had to wear!)

It's the final moment
Of the final
And time finger's raised
And there's a tear in the eye.
Cos past the floodlights
Flying high
There's a lone bird soaring
In the Barnsley sky.

A poem about Dickie Bird by Ian McMillan which he read out on BBC Radio Sheffield earlier today:

It's the final over
Of the final test
And Time is bowling
The final ball;
And the innings that stretched To 92
Will end just here
'Cos it's umpire's call.

This was taken 16 years ago when I took Evan down to Barnsley for his first away match.
We met Dickie Bird outside the ground & talked for well over an hour about football, cricket & life in general.
A really genuinely lovely fella.

Rest In Peace, Dickie! x

I am saddened to hear about the death of Dickie Bird, one of the country’s finest and most celebrated cricket umpires.

A proud Yorkshireman as well as a great cricketer and role model for the sport - I offer my condolences to his friends and family.
A message of condolence from the Speaker of the House of Commons. Sir Lindsay Hoyle MP.

It's 100 days until Christmas!

Yes we can hear some of you groaning from here.....But we thought it was the perfect opportunity to mention The Barnsley Carol (Christmas Eve) by Arthur Godfrey, a song lost for 90 years until we re-discovered and now it is being sung around Barnsley and beyond
