Maybe it kind of happens anyway? But it certainly hasn't helped. Definitely in the UK where it did push quite a few Conservatives ditch our older, generally nuanced attitude to speech and platforming for a more American free for all.

I think you can definitely say it weakened certain people's firewalls on the right. They say so themselves and since, whole careers and companies have been built off an "anything should go" (if often dishonest) attitude to speech that has been happier to include actual or borderline fascism.

Also, I'm not sure consensus frontrunner to replace a struggling leader is a particularly comfortable place to be for any longer than you have to? Given it often makes you either look pathetic or shady & disloyal, plus reasons for both leader and others with ambitions to do what they can to stop you

Also, as a prospective opposition leader the tacit admission of "I can't make things better by May" is somewhat revealing that you aren't all that confident you will at all of your own back. It's not like in govt where there will be a timelag between taking over and getting changed policies through.
