Today's #TBT post celebrates 120 years of the Journal of Biological Chemistry! The first issue of JBC was published in Oct. 1905. Here's the ASBMB Membership Committee w/a copy of that first issue! It was a fun moment looking back as the membership committee looks to the future.

They are standing in front of a bookcase lined with issues of the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Members of the ASBMB Membership Committee gather around a member who is holding a copy of the first issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry, which was published in Oct. 1905. They issue of the journal is opened and two members are taking photos on their phones.

The 2025 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell & Shimon Sakaguchi “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.”

Learn more about their work in this article by Ann Fernholm: ow.ly/MrKf50X8eF6.

#Immunology
Sakaguchi showed that the T cells with CD25 on their surface protect against autoimmune diseases through an experiment in mice that lacked T cells. The scurfy mutation causes a mutiny in the immune system. Brunkow and Ramsdell succeeded in narrowing down the area of the mutation and locating it in the Foxp3 gene, which turned out to be decisive in the development of regulatory T cells.
