We had some incredible speakers, including the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County, Mariyana Spyropoulos, and the support of more than 20 anti-gender-based violence organizations! We're still thinking about Nikki Patin's powerful closing poem. What an amazing day.

We are so proud to have been part of yesterday's You Are Not Alone event! The rain spared us, and we stood together and raised our voices for survivors (and hopefully some awareness for Domestic Violence Awareness Month).

Tell them that DV services in Chicago need stable funding to continue serving all the people who need help. Tell them how worried you are about the rise in DV fatalities, how you care about healthy relationships, how DV is a community-wide issue that affects people from all walks of life.

They are afraid to come to court, or commute to work, leaving them without income. But together, we can support them through this and show them they are not alone.

Several Ascend Justice clients need emergency help with basic needs. This is a scary and confusing time for people who are or may appear to be from another country, regardless of their immigration status, and many clients are too afraid to leave their homes.

We strongly oppose ICE presence in any courthouse, especially one intended to serve survivors and their families.
ascendjustice.org
By deploying ICE officers to detain people at the Domestic Violence Courthouse, the Department of Homeland Security is adding yet another barrier for survivors who are attempting to separate from abusive partners.
ascendjustice.org
We are deeply concerned about the impact on survivors of domestic violence, their trust in the court system, and their willingness to seek legal help in the future. Separation from an abusive partner is risky and takes incredible courage.

This morning, ICE agents in plain clothes detained a litigant at the Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse. While they did not interact with our clinic or our clients, ICE presence creates an atmosphere of fear and confusion.
