That's a wrap on another great #STEMFest in Newcastle!
It was a great event, talking to thousands of primary, secondary, and sixth form students about space! 🚀

It's been a busy #WorldSpaceWeek, speaking to students, giving a school talk, and being part of Meet a Scientist with Dynamic Earth 🌎

Looking forward to this tomorrow!
I will be discussing my latest work, linking outflows, radio, and dust in DESI QSOs ✨

Favourite (paraphrased) quote on why outreach is important: 'Astronomy is a hobby, disguised as a profession, paid for by the tax payers. I think the least we can do is to make our work accessible to the tax payers.’

🚨 Announcement! 🚨

Dr Victoria Fawcett, of @newcastleuni.bsky.social, has been named as the winner of the 2025 Caroline Herschel Prize Lectureship, awarded by the Herschel Society and RAS.

Her lecture topic will be: 'Unveiling the secrets of hidden supermassive black holes'.

Choose the best plan:
- Take a break from work, or…
- Take a break from work to exchange black hole theories with a student🌌
As we wrap up #VolunteersWeek2025, join Vicky! She has been taking part since 2023 and was one of the most active scientists last term.
The screenshot of an I'm a Scientist Chat reads: Student "Rae": @Vicky F, do you believe that anything is in the centre of a black hole? If you do, what do you think? Vicky: the short answer is that no one knows what is in the centre of a black hole! Because the gravity is so strong nothing, not even light, can escape a black hole. Rae: I heard a theory once that if anyone was to ever make it through a black hole it would open up into a 'light hole', which could be said was the big bang! Would something like that be possible?? Vicky: It's an interesting theory! Some people think black holes are wormholes that transport you to another time and place. However it is all theoretical and no one really knows what happens when you go into a black hole. So if we sent a drone into a black hole, it would not be able to escape or send a signal to tell us what it found. Some people think that if you fall into a black hole you keep falling forever, and that it is a literal "hole" in space!
