On 30 January 1944 she was deported to #Auschwitz. After the selection she was murdered in a gas chamber.

Where the trilliums sleep, awaiting spring… there’s a wonderful smell of leaf litter and wood. White-throated sparrows call, crickets sing.

A sunny patch of woods, backlit and glowing green with little stripes of sunlight on the leaf litter.

Narrow boardwalk over a damp area taken over by grasses and wildflowers, with the trees close together again at the far end. Orange is scattered through the green leaves in mostly maple woods.

My Friday walk after work wasn’t by water this week, because the woods were calling. Cawthra Woods, on my way home… a glorious hardwood forest with boardwalk in the dampest parts of the trails. I started at the Elliott Estate, and took the left fork to get to the boardwalk.
Gorgeous in all seasons.

Elliott Estate, a grand old two-story brick building used for a private school until a few years ago, now a historic building maintained by the city. It stands on a green lawn with woods all around. It’s lit by afternoon sun.

A dirt path leads into the woods: dense, mostly green deciduous trees with a few orange and yellow crowns under blue sky.

12 October 1892 | Edith Stein was born in Wrocław. She was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism & became a theologian & a Carmelite nun.

She was murdered in #Auschwitz in August 1942.
Stein was beatified in 1987 and canonized in October 1998.
