Sensory Joy
Aradia, Cheryl, and Patrice talk about their sensory experiences, specifically how to identify and experience joy through the senses. We talk about the differences and contradictions between being sensory avoidant vs sensory seeking, reclaiming our senses, finding agency in managing sensory experiences, and acknowledging the unsung joy of sheer relief.  Work with us by scheduling at the links below: Aradia: [coming soon] Cheryl: https://www.discoverclarity.ca   Patrice: https://www.patriceriley.comMatthew: https://www.theautisticcoach.com  Autistic Peer Support Coaching Collective: https://www.autisticcoaches.com Follow us on social media: Podcast: https://bsky.app/profile/autisticstuffpod.bsky.social  Aradia: [coming soon] Cheryl: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:xusgwlxppuqftnldu47e3f4a  Patrice: https://bsky.app/profile/autisticpresence.bsky.social Matthew: https://bsky.app/profile/theautisticcoach.bsky.social Theme music: https://bluedotsessions.bandcamp.com/track/vinyl-couch  A https://www.foxandravenmedia.com production Check out other FARM podcasts Black Girl From Eugene: https://www.spreaker.com/show/black-girl-from-eugene  Used2Sew: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/used2sew--6285838  Wheel of Time Spoilers: https://www.spreaker.com/show/wot-spoilers-podcast

Holy shit. This legit gave me chills.

Texas State Rep. Ann Johnson clapped back at GOP members amid Wednesday's redistricting vote.

WHITE WOMEN, this is the model. We have more power than others. We are the last to be silenced. We have a responsibility to SPEAK so others are HEARD.

Did you know...?

Autistic burnout is pervasive, long-term (3+ months) exhaustion, loss of function, and reduced tolerance to stimulus. It's described as being the result of chronic life stress and a mismatch of expectations and abilities without adequate supports.

Why the “all autistic people lack empathy” narrative is wrong…

Autistic people actually experience empathy in a wide range of ways

E.g. a study in 2023 found:

- many experience hyper-empathy
- some experience low empathy
- some experience empathy but find it difficult to understand or express

Metabolized anger can be an amazing catalyst for positive change.

The key is to not externalize it in ways that hurt others.

And to titrate in and out - I stop and take breaks when needed.

If the anger overwhelms me, I’ll gently ask it to dial down the intensity. Surprisingly, this works! (/6)

Or, if the energy for movement isn’t there, it’s helpful to light a candle and sit with the flame itself for a while. Something about being with the fire helps me to be with the fiery anger inside, without it overwhelming me. (/5)

“Anger needs heat,” my teacher Francis Weller says.

So I keep moving –wash some dishes, fold some laundry, go for a walk, take a strength training class. (/4)

When the anger is present, I find it’s helpful to notice it, and to create a little distance from the anger by saying to myself, “A part of me feels really angry right now.” (/3)

Rage for the missed opportunities for understanding, for healing, for accommodations.

Rage for the years of distress, burnouts, communication breakdowns that perhaps could have been avoided if a diagnosis had been present sooner. (/2)
