😖I find most of the verbiage describing a Red-naped Sapsucker's belly plumage woefully inadequate...😍🕸️

👇So tell me, wordsmiths, how would YOU Alt text her. This should be fun! #WoodpeckerWednesday 🪶

Red-naped Sapsuckers are black and white overall with a red cap, nape, and throat. They have a long white bar on the folded wing. A black stripe through the eye is bordered by white stripes. The belly is mottled black and white, with a dingy or yellowish cast. Female Red-naped Sapsuckers, like my sweetie clinging to a Slippery Elm sapling here, have a white patch on the chin while males have entirely red chins. That's what you find on teh google. I would say her belly has a cool spiderweb pattern that radiates from her bib, and mixed in with that yellowish cast it sure looks wicked!

Sunset-watch is canceled!

⛈️🌵Tropical Storm Priscilla is now spitting all over the Mojave Desert, but I caught a pretty intense virga rainbow this afternoon before the storm rolled in! ☁️🌈

Sweet rainbow color today, pretty sure that's virga too. Portrait first with blue sky still showing above the early rain clouds at the leading edge of the front moving across the Hualapai Valley. Then a tight landscape since the rainbow wasn't a huge arc and sat low on my horizon anyway.

In the last light of dusk, a serene Mule Deer fawn with enormous fuzzy ears looks back on her path through a frame filled with the golden curlicues topping a field of autumnal blue grama grass. I love this composition, and kept steering every hike for weeks over by this field hoping to spy some deer in it. The photography gods finally gave in with about 3 minutes of good light one evening with this fawn, her sibling, and their very disinterested mother doe. Not pictured. Zen.

Meeting of the Minds ⚔️

Love the energy of these guys, even if they’re still a little small to really challenge the big boys when push comes to shove.

These guys innocently wandered out of the nearby woods and nervously meandered into the field before deciding they really didn't trust the person standing right there.

White-tailed Deer

#mammals #deer #nature #wildlife #photography
A large brown deer stands in short grass directly facing the camera with his ears nervously held up. His antlers have forked into two paths at the tops, his black nose glistens with moisture, and his shining dark eyes are surrounded by long lashes. A second buck stands in short grass with his body turned to the right and his head turned toward the camera. He has much more distinct white patches around his eyes and on his throat. His long antlers have not begun to fork yet, and he looks reminiscent of a springbok. The second deer is now in profile facing right and starting to walk into a field with tall grasses. It is easier to see that his antlers are curved but not yet forking. The first deer is hiding in the field out of sight after taking some time to sniff the area. Deer have a good sense of smell, but their eyesight during the day is not so good, and so, even though they both looked directly at me and could probably scent me, they did not see enough movement from me to immediately scatter. The second deer was nervous enough to head back into the woods, and the one who made it into the field soon followed. He is seen here running across the thin strip of short grass between the field and the woods in profile facing left. His forefeet are down and bracing him while his rear feet are in the air as he prepares for another leap.

Black and white photograph of high desert rock formation. Rocks cast light and shadow against contrasted clouds in the sky.

A quote by Haruki Marakami

“ and once the storm is over, you won’t know how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t be sure that the storm is really over.
But one thing is certain; when you come out of storm, you will not be the same person. That’s what the storm is all about.”
