Diving for food is today’s theme, so I’ve got a graceful mallard diving, butt up, a juvie tufted duck going all in, and a seriously happy little little grebe who managed to snag a stickleback all by himself

His mate, mottled brown feathers, is in the back, next to the bank of the lake, trying to ignore her silly partner. A photograph of a young tufted duck in a lake. Yes in, not on. The brown wetlands bird is diving into the lake to grab some yummy algae and fish lunch. Here, he is diving away from the camera. There is a crown of water where his head went into the water. His shoulders and back are arched over the water. His tail is in the water still and water is surging upwards - I believe from his legs pushing down to give him lift. A photograph of a young little grebe. She is in the middle of the lake. She’s just come up, with her catch - a small silver stickleback. A very happy wee bird!

Last year I experimented with high-angle through-the-surface shots of a mute #swan and this is one of the best results.

I've got a free week in June as Lyndsey is off on holiday with her Mum, so i was looking for when she's away.

Wow, I've just looked at availability and there isn't anything left for May & June which is when I would have gone. So it looks like it's Scotland or back to Farne again, then book Skomer early for 2027 now I know it fills up fast.

Is it a wee diving torpedo, or a fuzzy floating potato? It's both.

(Pied-billed grebe fresh from yesterday. They have their breeding coloration, now. Very exciting.)

It is a small brown water bird with a short pale gray bill that has a black stripe in the middle of it, a fluffy little white tail, and alert brown eyes ringed with pale bare flesh that really makes them pop. The lighting is shady and diffuse and green-toned, and the rippling water around the grebe reflects various bright green hues in wavy patterns of shore plants growing out of frame.
