chose today's #BirdOfTheDay theme as #DivingForFood, birds that dive under water for food. I've gone with a Common Merganser drake. Sadly it came back up a little past my camera range. I still shot it's struggle to swallow an XL fish.

I'm going with a rare winter guest we have in the bigger lakes here, the velvet scoter.

They tend to be out on the lake where they feed mostly on molluscs in depths of 20-30m.

Photo taken on Skomer Island ~ Pembrokeshire ~ West Wales The Atlantic Puffin is a small, stout seabird—about the size of a pigeon (10-11 inches)—often called the "clown of the sea" due to its large, brightly coloured, triangular beak (red, yellow, and blue grey) during breeding season. It has a black back, white belly, and pale greyish-white cheeks, with bright orange legs and feet. They are compact and round-bodied, sitting upright on rocky cliffs or swimming high on the water. They have short wings and a large, blunt head. The most striking feature is the large, flat, brightly coloured bill, which is used for carrying fish. Summer (Breeding): Brilliant white face, black top of head/back, red/yellow/blue beak, and bright orange feet. Winter: The bright colours fade, the face turns a darker grey, and the beak becomes smaller and duller. On land, they waddle, but they are excellent swimmers, using their wings to "fly" underwater and their webbed feet as rudders. They look like a small, colourful, chubby penguin with a very thick beak.
