I reeeeeeeeeeally hope we still get this armor set in Midnight 😭😭😭 It's the only one of all the concept art armor sets that we haven't seen on Alpha yet, so I really hope it wasn't cut because it was my favorite of the ones shown at Gamescom.💔

Presenting: Prey Is Astalor Harvesting You Like A Venthyr

Ok so it can be pretty reasonably assumed that Astalor was put in charge of the golems after the events of the Isle of Thunder in MoP (we see him powering them up in Talador and some quests that didn't make it to live WoD allude to it).

Everything else from here is convoluted headcanon bullshit. (Be warned)

Those golems ran on anima and whether that anima is the related to the anima in the shadowlands was both denied and confirmed so I'm ignoring dev opinions on this and going with SORT OF?? (Let's just go with it ok.)

So Astalor has had to learn how to control these golems and work with the anima they run on but not having access to the ancient mogu techniques means he's not quite as efficient with it as he would like. (He's an ambitious guy alright.
You don't come up with a plan to drain a naaru if you're complacent)

Anyway. Shadowlands rolls around. We didn't see Astalor there but we also didn't NOT see Astalor there so there's no reason not to assume he didn't get curious and visit at some point while the veil was open. Again. You don't come up with a plan to drain a naaru if you're not a curious guy.

And that means two things:
1) He'd encounter a different form of anima
2) He'd probably hear that his old boss (Kael'thas) is about in Revendreth.

So it's not impossible that he took a little trip to Revendreth and learnt some anima harvesting techniques from the Venthyr along the way. (It's valuable to his work, after all).

So while the venthyr mostly harvest sins, "dread" is counted as one. So maybe other strong negative emotions could be used to harvest it in the way they harvest. And the name of the (currency? meter??? something??) the Prey system runs on is "Anguish".

What if Prey is Astalor having some weird little mad scientist moment and using the anguish (and fear and dread and whatever strong emotions) the player and the prey generate through hunting and being hunted to harvest anima to more efficiently fuel his golems.
