Do you know that definitions can make or break legislation? @congressfellows.bsky.social alum @b-cavello.bsky.social (2021 Congressional Innovation Fellow), alongside their @aspendigital.bsky.social team, helped write a handbook about how we define AI.

This project is a truly great resource. Aspen Digital's Emerging Tech team is the best around for insightful and accessible information about AI and this handbook has an amazing line up of expert authors. Check it out!
SO EXCITED THAT THIS IS HAPPENING!
A passion project for the last five years, today we launched Defining Technologies of Our Time, a practical resource for anyone wondering how to scope "AI" in a legal or policy context.

Instead of "one definition to rule them all" #DefiningTechnologiesOfOurTime explores the most influential definitions from the NDAA, the OECD, the Algorithmic Accountability Act, and the EU AI Act and their "descendants" (in Colorado, California, and beyond) that have evolved policy strategies.

I'll come out and say it: THERE IS NO ONE TRUE DEFINITION FOR AI! šŸ—£ļø
Context is key when #DefiningAI. A research funding bill may have different needs than a data privacy bill.
What's important is understanding the CONSEQUENCES of different word choices—different philosophies—on what is covered & how

Decisions in definitions cascade through entire documents AND definitions are some of the most copy/pasted portions of legislative text. They are tremendously powerful & require greater scrutiny, so I'm THRILLED to have all these stellar experts weighing in!

Before working in the Senate as a @congressfellows.bsky.social, I'd often wonder "WHY are lawyers LIKE THAT??"
Now that I've actually worked on drafting legislation & really reckoned with the power of legal definitions, I understand how tiny choices of words or where the comma goes have BIG impacts!
