Capitals beat writer @ The Washington Post
Justin Sourdif is 23 years old and played his 27th NHL game last night. He did it as the Caps' second line center, with two assists while defending the Blue Jackets' top line.
"We just overlook it and go, ‘Oh, okay, that’s normal.’ But that’s not normal."

‘That’s not normal’: Justin Sourdif is on a meteoric rise with the Caps
With poise and skill beyond his years, the Capitals’ ‘other’ rookie is earning attention.

Freakin' Ethen Frank, man. 4-3

The heaviest of heavyweight bouts between Tom Wilson and 6-foot-9 Curtis Douglas. What a fight that was. For Tom to get that takedown .... my goodness

Feels much more like a pull designed to wake up the team than because of Thompson's performance. The four goals against were a shorthanded breakaway, a perfect bounce off the post, Hagel in the slot and a breakaway for Kucherov. Hard to fault him on any of those.
Logan Thompson pulled after giving up four goals on six shots in the first period. First time the Caps have pulled a goalie this season

2-1 Tampa on the power play. Hot start rapidly unraveled for the Caps

Brandon Hagel ties the game shorthanded just 14 seconds into the Caps' power play. Sick shot, but the power play woes continue

1-0 Capitals. Justin Sourdif with a rebound at the side of the net to beat Johansson just 1:06 into the game

Nic Dowd (upper body) skated this morning and is considered day to day, Spencer Carbery said, but won’t play tonight for the Caps. No lineup changes other than Logan Thompson in net

As it turned out, I picked a great day to do a behind the scenes video for my TikTok. The Caps' emotional, high-octane win in Montreal through my eyes, as the beat writer who gets another gray hair every time they score eight goals when I'm on deadline.

Behind the scenes of the Caps’ emotional, unbelievable 8-4 win in Montreal on Thursday, through the eyes of their beat writer. Games like these give me grey hair, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything....

Dylan Strome arrived in Montreal as a father of two, with a third due soon. He left as a father of three, after learning during the first period that his daughter, Sutton, was born quickly while he was 600 miles away.
On an emotional, unforgettable night:

The newest Caps fan was born last night. Her dad had three assists.
Sutton Strome was born in the middle of Washington’s 8-4 win over Montreal, a three-assist night for her father, Dylan.

An emotional Dylan Strome just told us that his wife, Tayler, had their third daughter, Sutton Kimberly, during the first period tonight. He said it was a horrible feeling not to be able to be there with her, but he’s incredibly proud and excited to get home to meet his daughter.

And then Sonny Milano adds another, just for fun. 8-4. My god.

A hat trick for Alex Ovechkin. Never count him out, but I honestly didn't know if he'd get another one at 40. Unbelievable. A large handful of hats hit the ice here in Montreal

Alex Ovechkin off the rush. 6-4 with 3:57 left. No lead has been safe in this game, but maybe that will be enough

Justin Sourdif with the shot block of his life to keep Montreal from tying this game

5-3. Sonny Milano, a video game goal. Wow
November 21, 2025 at 1:46 AM
Nick Suzuki scores on a delayed penalty. 4-3. Prooobably not a good idea for the Caps to get into a track meet with this team on the second night of a back-to-back, but it's too late for that now

Tom Wilson smokes Jake Evans in the corner, and then Jakob Chychrun rips home the Caps' fourth goal. Not quite a Game 4 playoffs level hit from Wilson, but not that far off
November 21, 2025 at 1:38 AM
Joe Veleno with a wicked one-timer to beat Lindgren, that was sick. 3-2 Capitals
November 21, 2025 at 1:26 AM
Ethen Frank x2! 3-1 Capitals. Didn't see that coming. Canadiens are pulling Montembeault, Jakub Dobes coming in
November 21, 2025 at 1:17 AM
We'll see if the Caps have more than two good minutes in them this period, but at least they're making the most of it when they do have their legs. A goal one minute into the first and now a second 1:58 into the second.
November 21, 2025 at 1:15 AM
Really bright start to the second period for the Caps, and Ethen Frank cashes in. 2-1
November 21, 2025 at 1:14 AM
Canadiens tie it on the power play, after a review to make sure it crossed the line. The Caps have done essentially nothing productive since their early goal
