I think Jack Vance might have has some of the 'peek-behind-the-curtain' element that's sometimes attributed to H P Lovecraft. The TOTAL social division seen in Dying Earth is something that could actually happen, post 'superintelligence' or whatever it will be.

Trying to spend Sundays doin' God and stuff, but they just won't let up will they. Anyway, reading the Bible and realizing how wrong I got this one. Like a lot of people I got all my totally wrong ideas from ' Paradise Lost ' the epic poem by Milton, and Dante's ' Inferno ' to a lesser extent.
