So I gave it a try, and Yumiko was the second tutor I had. ( The first was Sanam, and she turned out to not be Japanese, she was Iranian ! ) And through Yumiko I got introduced to her circle. ( I wrote about a lot of this on LiveJournal )

As strange as it sounds, given being almost deaf, I taught myself Japanese up to the point where I had to get a tutor. At the time I was still using hearing-aids, and if you were sitting right near me and there was no background noise and such I could talk to you pretty normally.

The only good New Year's party ever was the one with Yumiko and my Japanese friends at the time.
