The UK government has confirmed that alcohol duty rates will be increased in line with inflation, staying the same in real terms.

We welcome this decision.

We welcome the Chancellor’s decision in today’s Autumn Budget to allow alcohol duty to keep pace with inflation.
However, there's still much more to do.

We will continue to call for:
1) An annual escalator of 2% + RPI
2)A national alcohol strategy

Alcohol harm continues to rise in the UK, with record alcohol deaths, and only 22% in need accessing alcohol support. Dependent drinkers face multiple, persistent barriers to entering recovery and social reintegration…like stigma and 24/7 alcohol promotion

1/ The rising toll of alcohol harm is staggering.
Every year - 980,000 hospital admissions and secondary diagnoses, a factor in 525,000 violent incidents, and a cost of £1.5bn a year in the NE alone. @ias.org.uk @aha-uk.bsky.social

By law, food and drinks have more information on the label than alcohol, such as calories.
So why not alcohol?

Men are more likely to drink at risky levels and be alcohol dependent, and 2x as likely to die from alcohol. We welcome recognition of these issues in the Men's Health Strategy - but a national alcohol strategy is long overdue

Raising alcohol duty by 2% above inflation for 5 years would bring an extra £3.4 billion into the Treasury.

This would pay the salaries of 37,000 NHS nurses over the period.

The UK should halve its risky drinking rate over the next ten years, returning alcohol death rates to pre-pandemic levels in half the time, says a new report. And it should also make itself able to support 80% of alcohol dependent people. @ias.org.uk

Allowing the alcohol industry to influence policy-making is a clear conflict of interests and steps to reduce alcohol harm must be taken independently.

Cheap supermarket alcohol is the biggest threat to pubs, according to publicans.

The government could raise off-trade duty above inflation while protecting pubs via draught duty relief.

That means healthier communities and stronger pubs.
