And an amazing presentation by Prof. Overall today. The attention to detail and the ability to follow through on protein-protein interactions and mechanisms that underlie these interactions is remarkable.

The bat paradox: what nature’s night flyers could teach us about pandemics – and ourselves, by Linda Geddes.

Also, right in time for Halloween. 🦇 Bats are ecologically important and play many crucial roles.

The bat paradox: what nature’s night flyers could teach us about pandemics – and ourselves
Bats carry many deadly viruses, yet rarely fall ill themselves. Rather than fearing them, scientists say we should study and protect them, to safeguard our own health.

We’ve identified a highly divergent betacoronavirus from South American bat that encodes a functional furin cleavage site.
Another fascinating reminder of how diverse coronavirus evolution is in wildlife reservoirs.

Are bats tolerant of all viruses? With a comparative -omics approach, we show that Egyptian fruit bat cells show both antiviral and pro-inflammatory immune responses to infection with Zika virus while our Jamaican fruit bat cells are not susceptible.

‘One Health’ keeps humans one step ahead of the microbes
As new viruses “jump” from wildlife to humans and we struggle with antimicrobial resistance and even climate change, a new interdisciplinary approach to human health might just save the day.
