In honor of spooky month, share a 4 word horror story that only someone in your profession would understand

I'll go first: Six page commercial lease.

Not only is it not worth it, typically it's actively harmful. The reason being, when you do your future projects you'll leave your audience behind and have to crosspost if you want them to know about it.

Yes! This is my favourite kind of talk! Looking forward to it. :-)

"after playing it an unhealthy amount of time"

Only 10 and already he's internalized ideas characterizing fun as harmful!

You're not wrong, but the other thing is live service games. A lot of players mainly want to play with their friends, which means giant megagames that reward heavy time commitment. Singleplayer experiences have a much smaller slice of the gaming pie now.

Definitely moving in the wrong direction, but is this maybe the chance for a high profile indie event not based around huge amounts of air travel and expense?

The cat on the right seems to have settled in slightly deeper than intended and is now looking concerned at the possibility of being stuck in Autumn.

Reminds me much more of Luck Be a Landlord than Balatro. (The former being a major inspiration for the latter.)

Easily @thinkygames.com - literally every post is worth reading. Might not be for everyone, though. :-)

I wish people would, a lot more. We get so many safe-but-dull design decisions because they don't seem worth criticising. It's the "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" of game design.

Also, I want him to still have a big saggy face, not look all perky and kittenish. Also also, I have very high standards for marvellous, mechanical mouse organs!

In Unity, a runtime script handling a prefab can add components to it. If it does, they stay there on exit. However, it cannot remove components "to avoid data loss". A classic example of seemingly reasonable design causing chaos... BRB, off to remove a few hundred duplicate components by hand. :-/

Be careful, I think this means there's going to be a boss battle!

Update: Yes, this is really good! Everything I hoped it would be already. Would recommend.

It has made them feel stupid and so must be destroyed. There is no worse crime.

Have been watching this one for a while. Excited to finally get to play!

I'm sure this will cause no problems at all in the context of their insistence on deferring everything to "the people". Hopefully at some point they'll have the courage to write some policies without making everything a referendum.

"Our plan was profoundly stupid. The problems were pointed out to us in advance, but we didn't listen, so now we're pretending we can solve them."

I see this as something a bit different. It sounds like you DO know that always shooting the moon is terrible. You do it anyway because your personal utility payoffs don't match the game's scoring system.

Given how good your character design was in Sunken Stones I'm 100% here for this. Sounds hard to fund, though. I think someone should give you a few million in angel investment.

Unfortunately those same people don't do too well with input randomness a lot of the time. Trying repeatedly to draft decks not well supported by the cardpool isn't a recipe for success.

Really good intro to puzzle design. Worth bookmarking to share the link with new devs.

I wrote an Intro to Puzzle Design article🧩

This covers the usual points I discuss with people who are working on their first puzzle game. Given how some concepts can be quite abstract, I think a written piece allows everyone to digest it at their own pace.

Oh, I absolutely guarantee there are excellent Black British fantasy writers we've never heard of because they aren't getting published.

All he's doing is this article is proving that he feels comfortable writing about a topic before he's done the reading. It's a shame. As a scientist he should know better.
