More sub teacher than journalist these days, but also working on The Great American Novel. Still a soccer ref. Playing in a bunch of bands. Still curling. Keeping dystopian talk to the essentials so I can live my remaining days in some sort of peace.
Not that KC should panic, but I back Berger if this goes to PKs. #KCvGOT #NWSL #NWSLplayoffs

If you’re Gotham at this point, are you trying to kill time and get into PKs with Berger?

I am now 0-2 on my #NWSLPlayoffs picks.

At this point, I’m wondering if any Spirit players will get injured during PKs. #NWSL #WASvLOU

We should just vote on the winner and skip PKs. #NWSL #WASvLOU

Not sure it’s being stressed enough that the Spirit lost two important players *during* this game in addition to having the usual absentees out, including the obviously not-really-available Rodman. This team has dealt with so much. #NWSL #WASvLOU #NWSLplayoffs

I think the ref’s watch is broken. #NWSL

McKeown out. Was Audi Field built on a haunted graveyard? #NWSL #NWSLplayoffs #WASvLOU

I’m getting the feeling we won’t be seeing Trinity Rodman. Spirit have a sub window in extra time, don’t they?

I’d argue Esme Morgan shouldn’t have seen yellow unless she dropped a few magic words — dissent should be more than an outburst — and Ary Borges should’ve seen yellow for a cynical foul at midfield. I’m surprised they didn’t take a longer look at the Louisville goal. Generally, though, pretty good.
Reffing in this #WASvLOU game has been excellent. Proactively reigning in chippy fouls at the beginning of each half has kept things much cleaner than average between these teams. Great job refs!

Looks onside from this view, but I have a small phone, so …

Soccer’s unfair sometimes. In no way, shape or form does Louisville deserve to be level here, and there have been some cynical fouls. But the Spirit have wasted tons of chances, too.

Racing Louisville's Courtney Petersen with the service and Kayla Fischer taps it in for the equalizer!

Yes, I stand up for refs a lot, but did they seriously not take a longer look at that goal? On first glance, looked off. #NWSL #WASvLOU

Correct advantage call, but you’ve got to come back and give a yellow to Ary Borges for that. #NWSL #WASvLOU

Ah … yep, that’s a danger on short corners. Smart play by Louisville to pull up so quickly. #NWSL #WASvLOU
Vid of offside from a friend at the game. Pretty quickly leads to goal so probably right call. #NWSL #WASvLOU

If you think complaints about refs are limited to the #NWSL, please check out @suzywrack.bsky.social’s story on Arsenal-Chelsea today. (I can’t get to the Guardian site ATM.) Or see any EPL broadcast.

I think refs are too prone to calling offside on VAR when it’s not clear and obvious. #WASvLOU

The Spirit have been knocking on the door here, one-way traffic. Audi erupted on that would-be goal before VAR erased it. The only logical call with where the restart got placed is that Santos was offside on the return pass, but the angles offered on TV are hardly definitive. Still scoreless. #NWSL

Every league says the same thing, but I’m curious about this one — did I hear the commentators say it was earlier than we saw on the replay, right when the corner was taken? That’s a danger of short corners. #WASvLOU #NWSL

One of the most depressing political trends I have witnessed has been seeing that the people who want to keep trans women out of women's sports don't base their arguments entirely on reasonable data about male puberty and fairness. Instead, they make it by dehumanizing *all* trans women.

A youth soccer referee postgame press conference, complete with thoughts about how recent events in the WNBA and the media flow downhill into youth sports.

Granted, I've been a little likely to defend referees after watching people exalting Cheryl Reeve as some kind of hero for complaining about a call **that the refs got absolutely right**. But I thought the calls at the end of each half in Spirit-Wave were fair. #nwsl #makewaves #thatsthespirit

The Spirit have GOT to be sharper than this. Monday missed an easy one, and Rodman put two straight breakaways right at Sheridan. On the second, she could've chipped Sheridan at any time. Maybe the Wave don't deserve the draw, but the Spirit don't deserve the win. #nwsl

EDIT: Never mind!

In the closed-captioning for the Raiders-Commanders game, every time they say "Ashton Jeanty," it comes up as "Jen Psaki."
