Based at University of Technology Sydney, our research focuses on species ecology and biogeography, using advanced statistical methods and modelling to examine how species and communities interact with their environments across spatial and temporal scales.

🌊🐬 New Paper Out! 🧬✨

We’ve developed the first ever epigenetic clock for common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) — using DNA from stranded & bycaught individuals to estimate age non-lethally and with high accuracy. A major step forward for dolphin conservation.

Dental Ageing Offers New Insights Into the First Epigenetic Clock for Common Dolphins (Delphinus delphis)
We present the first species-specific epigenetic clock for common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), calibrated using dental ages from stranded and bycaught individuals. Despite concerns about dental agei....

New research out! 🐬

We tested 16 NZ toothed whale species to see if habitat predicts PFAS levels.

Results:
• Habitat = weak predictor
• Sex & age = stronger predictors
• Even remote oceans aren’t safe from PFAS

We’ve just started a blog where we’ll share our #research in #Ecology, #ClimateChange, #Biogeography, data & softwares. 🌿

It’s still early days, but we’d love for you to check it out and connect if these topics resonate.

@fredsaltre.bsky.social worked with Year 5–6 students in Adelaide ont how #ClimateChange, #LandClearing, and #InvasiveSpecies affect animals distributions and survival. 🌱🌏

Big thanks to the amazing teacher who made this happen.💚

🐨 New paper out on #Genomics Kangaroo Island #Koalas #Australia. Islands protect species from threats, but...
🔎 Findings:
• KI koalas = lower #genetic #diversity than mainland
• Evidence of inbreeding + maladaptation from a bottleneck
• Genetic rescue needed

Conservation Arks: Genomic Erosion and Inbreeding in an Abundant Island Population of Koalas
The persistence of many threatened species depends on isolated habitat patches such as conservation parks, fenced reserves, and islands. While these ‘conservation arks’ provide refuge from many conte...

Our new research shows northern #Australia’s monsoon #rainfall over 150,000 years was shaped by sea level shifts + coastal proximity, often out of phase with the East Asian #monsoon.
