How to write an artist statement:
1. Procrastinate until just before a deadline.
2. Make an attempt, but it’s all just nonsensical letters and words on a screen.
3. Conjure a headache to make an excuse to give up on the deadline.
4. Go paint instead because it’s the only language that matters.

Today’s studio view.

Took a break from all the fascism to see the Leonora Carrington show at the Rose Art Museum. We bonded, and I dreamt of running away to Mexico too. (More info in alt text)

Wall text: Night Nursery Everything 1947 Tempera on Masonite Private collection The most important thing that has ever happened to me is my two sons. - Leonora Carrington Leonora Carrington escaped war-torn Europe by marrying Renato Leduc, a Mexican diplomat and poet based in Portugal. The two arrived in Mexico in 1942 and divorced shortly thereafter. In Mexico, Carrington developed lifelong friendships with Spanish-born painter Remedios Varo and Hungarian-born photographer Kati Horna (née Katalin Deutsch). The three Surrealist women, nicknamed "the three witches" because of their interest in magic and the occult, were at the center of a close-knit community of refugee artists and intellectuals who made Mexico their home. Through Horna and Varo, Carrington met Emerico (" Chiki") Weisz, a Hungarian Jewish photographer who had worked with Robert Capa and escaped from a concentration camp before finding refuge in Mexico. The two married and had two sons, Gabriel (b. 1946) and Pablo (b. 1947). Scholars suggest that the birth of her children evoked memories of Carrington's own childhood and that this blend is presented in the warm scene depicted in Night Nursery Everything. Salomon Grimberg posits that the scene "takes place by candlelight in Gaby's bedroom. He is the one-year-old toddler in the crib floating in the upper left of the room, and Leonora, who was about to give birth to Pablo, her second son, is working at her spinning wheel below.... Opposite, their cat sits comfortably on a cupboard." The glowing tones and enchanting ambience echoes Gaby and Pablo's memories of the magical childhood that they experienced through their mother's eyes. Wall text: The Chair: Daghda Tuatha de Danann 1955 Oil on canvas Private collection The painting's title and the inscriptions within it reveal its Irish source material. The Tuatha de Danann-"children of Danu," the universal mother goddess— were the third Divine Dynasty of Irish lore. Daghda was their father deity, who specialized in Druid magic. "The ancient Irish venerated divine forces in all aspects of nature, in particular the sun god as a life-giver and promoter of fertility," Carrington scholar Salomon Grimberg explains. " The Chair: Daghda Tuatha de Danann brings together-in the image of a throne decorated with references to the creative power of the sun—the fertility of Daghda... Tuathan myths, and the glory of the children of Danu. The sun, like a flower with its petal-like rays, rests atop its high back, leading our eye to various solar references adorning the chair, including a bird rising from the sun, and a spiked wheel on the seat. ... Swirling mist emerging from under the chair travels upward, over two disembodied hands that play with the yet unrevealed future in the form of an egg; on the table, the apparition of a white rose is growing out of another egg." The egg is a ubiquitous symbol of birth and transformation, central in myriad cultures and occult beliefs. It appears often within Carrington's oeuvre. Wall text: Pastoral 1950 Oil on canvas Private collection An intuitive feminist and environmentalist from a very early age, Carrington's quest for a harmonious coexistence for all living creatures on a well-cared-for earth finds expression in this utopian landscape. Art historical references, from Giorgione's The Tempest (1506 - 08) to Manet's Luncheon on the Grass (1862 - 63), do not obscure or diminish Carrington's unique vision. Wall text: The only thing I know is that I don't know. - Leonora Carrington Leonora Corrington: Dream Weaver, the artist's first solo exhibition in New England, features rarely seen paintings and drawings by British-born, Mexican Surrealist artist and author Leonora Carrington (1917-2011). Spanning over six decades of prolific creativity and reflecting a tenacious quest for knowledge, the artworks on view present mesmerizing portals into otherworldly realms of magic and mystery, populated by hybrid creatures and esoteric symbols A pioneer of Surrealism, Carrington's work embodies her inquisitive nature and unbounded imagination. Born into a weolthy Anglo-rish family. Carrington would spend her life freeing herself trom conventions and gendered strictures imposed upon her by society. Her rebellious spirit was nourished by her frish grandmother, mother, and nanny, who encouraged her immersion in imaginary worlds, and initiatec her interest in trish taires. to klore, and mythology. Urawing and writing since an early age, she convinced her parents to send her to art schools in London and Florence. At nineteen, her mother gave ner merbert keads lyso book on surredism, inspiring ner to rom the art movement in france. Alter an intense buf short-lived love affair with Max Ernst, Carrington experienced a series of traumatic events that led to o severe mental breakdown, forced institutionalization, and. finally, e daring escape from war-torn Europe. She settled in Mexico in 1942, when Mexico opened its doors to turopea refugees, and lived the rest of her long and very productive life in her adopted homeland. Leonora Carrington: Dream Weaver highlights the artis's versotility as she explored a wide variety of mediums, including tempero, gouache, acrylic, oil, pencil, pen, and fiber. Additionally, among the numerous drawings in the show are preparatory skelches for paintings and a mural, revealing Corrington's creative process as well as her virtuosity.
