I don't think we are obliged to take people of any opinion who have this sort of relationship to empirics seriously. It's just that simple, Yglesias is a troll and we shouldn't take anything he says seriously.
matt & co’s theory of how public opinion on immigration would respond to new information was simply empirically wrong.
at this point the only reasonable conclusion is they refuse to update their priors w/ new data because the data is inconvenient for them

Dedicated climate desks in newsrooms cause as many problems as they were meant to solve. They tend to become climate journalism silos, with the energy and business desk treating climate as an opinion or ‘ESG issue that had its time’.
