Batgirl and the Birds of Prey No. 18 is a tightly executed and perfectly paced done in one from writers Julie and Shawna Benson. Marcio Takara is a personal favorite artist of mine and their heavy line work is nicely balanced by expert colors from Jordan Boyd.

I’m not sure how much generational fondness there is for Bob Harras and Steve Epting on Avengers, but they were the creative team of my childhood, so I have a certain nostalgia. In particular I have always found Harras and his soap opera heavy writing fun.

I haven’t watched enough Okada…does he ever hit the first Rainmaker of the match?

I’m perpetually 3-4 months behind on AEW, but I know what happens with the Unified title, and despite sometimes being a “too many belts” guy, I actually think the video game-esque idea of being able to unlock a bonus championship is a cool way to generate additional storylines.

I like the combination of Geoff Johns and Alex Ross as writers on Justice Society of America as I think it takes their alchemical creativity to combine Kingdom Come with the New Gods in Gog’s origin. I also think Ross’ pages in Issue No. 16 are particular standout works of art.

Ann Nocenti captures the headstrong charm of Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel: Dark Tempest while also working in the relevant social commentary I consider a hallmark of her best work. Paolo Villanelli is terrific on art but the crisp colors of Java Tartaglia really transform the story.

Superman No. 651 actually boasts a modern age Prankster believably standing up to Green Lantern and Hawkgirl in large part because Pete Woods’ art is equal parts fun and dangerous. I’m here for the quiet moment where Lois and Clark affirm their partnership though.

I’m not terribly familiar with Marvel’s Scarecrow, but he’s a great pull from Kurt Busiek and Tom DeFalco to menace Untold Tales of Spider-Man for his unexpected parallels with our hero. Pat Olliffe and Al Williamson really seem to get better with each issue and this is another peak.

Patient Zero and the Daughters of Gotham made for interesting and nuanced antagonists in Birds of Prey. Julie & Shawna Benson had something to say with this arc and didn’t sacrifice story to do it. Roge Antonio had a big task with the expansive cast and handled it beautifully.

I feel like Wonder Man is a character who has been portrayed all over the place through the years, but I have a soft spot for his 90s wannabe actor persona as seen in Operation: Galactic Storm, which gives me high hopes for the TV show.

Justice Society of America No. 15 is a great chance for Dale Eaglesham to show off his action chops with a big battle. I continue to be impressed at the way Geoff Johns and Alex Ross balance the tasks of a worthy Kingdom Come sequel with not losing the JSA in the process.

Ann Nocenti is the perfect veteran voice for a retro Storm series as her devil may care tone captures the outsize dramatic fun of Chris Claremont’s classic Ororo. Likewise, Sid Kotian’s unique art really fits this assignment.

Up, Up and Away poses an interesting challenge for writers Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns: a Superman story without Superman. Their brilliant way in is to show the depth and versatility we don’t always get to see from Clark Kent.

Pat Olliffe really shines when he gets to put a sheen on Silver Age designs like the X-Men in issue No. 21. Kurt Busiek rises to the occasion of writing the less heralded originals and retrofitting some of the more modern metaphor.
