Mitch Shelley spends the bulk of Resurrection Man No. 6 locked in a trunk, which is fine as it gives Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning a chance to play with the quirky Body Doubles. Credit to artists Joe Phillips, Dexter Vines and Butch Guice who take us on a journey to Apokolips and back.

Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 13 is the fulcrum point of the series to date as Kurt Busiek wraps the Sally Avril/Bluebird saga in a way that gives the book gravitas and really makes it matter. Pat Olliffe really evokes Steve Ditko here.

I was checked out of Superman during the era where Jon Kent was a kid, but reading this story from Patrick Gleason and Peter J. Tomasi helps me appreciate the charm of the character. The art on this issue captures the tone of the Fourth World. Kudos to Dinei Ribeiro’s colors.

Paul Jenkins makes the inspired choice to go beyond the Royal Family in his Inhumans mini. Jae Lee does his best work with room to explore the background characters. Maximus really jumps off the page in a big way.

As I’ve said throughout The Lightning Saga, the passion of these writers for the material, particularly Brad Meltzer on Justice League of America, is both undeniable and contagious. Revisiting the super hero pageantry through this story has been fun.

Danny Ketch: Ghost Rider is on the lower end of these Marvel retro books, but it’s a compelling case for why this character shouldn’t be consigned to limbo. These are also a nice chance to see if newer artists can rise to classic storytelling and Daniel Picciotto passes the test.

I always forget that Lobo’s 90s ongoing ran so long, but if the Genesis tie-in is an indication of the work writer Alan Grant was doing, kudos for being prescient of future stuff like The Boys. Carl Critchlow gives off vibes of Darick Robertson—I like his work here.

Betty Brant takes center stage in Untold Tales of Spider-Man No. 12, and once again, playing by the rules of dancing within existing continuity, Kurt Busiek maintains the vintage tone while fledging out another milquetoast character.

I’ve read a lot of Apokolips stories, plenty featuring Superman, but after some fun Lex Luthor stuff, Peter J. Tomasi and Patrick Gleason find a neat way in with reverence to the Kirby material through Lois Lane and the Female Furies.

Jae Lee’s art with Dave Kemp and Avalon is perfect for Inhumans as it possesses an exotic beauty that matches the promise of the concept but marries it with a dirty grit grounding this particular story.

I’m not familiar with Francesco Mortarino but really like his work on Cult of Carnage: Misery—very solid storytelling with some neat experimental layouts. On the story side, Sabir Pirzada takes a tenured but historically shallow character in Liz Allan and adds considerable depth.

Aquaman No. 37 reminds me a lot of a vintage Jack Kirby Fourth World one off with Peter David giving some love to a random Parademon. I’ve always been a fan of J. Calafiore’s hyper detailed pencils and they serve the action really nicely here.
