Good mail day/week. Two 4Ks that I’m pretty eager to revisit (especially the Woo, which I haven’t seen in decades—pretty sure VHS) and a Teruo Ishii that I haven’t seen and missed that it had been released.

The run of Filmmaker Magazine under Scott & Vadim produced some of the most fascinating and important work on understanding indie film in terms of economics, technology, and the actual stakes of art. I was honored to write for Vadim, easily one of the best editors I've worked with. Hire Vadim!
Some news: I'm being laid off! After 11+ years and 48 issues, Friday will be my last day. I'm 100% looking for work and definitely not married to being in film. I have many transferable corporate/organizational skills. Email is first dot last at gmail

Thankful to have been asked to again participate in this poll, my ballot weighed heavily on the side of Japanese exploitation this year because those were the most exciting releases for me. Banner year for Criterion. Great year overall for physical media.
Happy New Year!

Here are my top fifteen movies with a 2025 world premiere date. Still have several to see, so this is a snapshot. Good year for new movies imo.

I grabbed THE IDIOTS and DOGVILLE on Blu Ray from @4xblu.bsky.social today. I probably should have sprung for the Curzon boxset of Von Trier films but I owned too many already for it to make sense. Good special features on these discs, for those able to play Region B discs.

My mom gave me the Shout! blaxploitation classics boxset for Christmas. It was fun explaining to everyone in my family what exactly “blaxploitation” means and why I would want it.

Good mail day / early Christmas gifts to myself. The lovely new 4K editions of POSSESSION and RE-ANIMATOR from the wonderful folks at Second Sight. Should be a final, definitive copy of each of those.

I don't watch comedy specials. I prefer good recap article. That way you get both the comic’s ideas as well as the critic’s thinking.

I still have a few on the way, but here’s my vinyl collection of new music released in 2025. Somewhere around 45 new releases added to my collection (with a few unavoidable doubles like Clipse, Wet Leg, Marissa Nadler, etc). Good year in music.

Doing catch up on this year’s albums and I’m immediately smitten with Maria Somerville’s LUSTER, which is on 4AD and sounds like 4AD in the best possible way. Lovely, ethereal dream pop.

Also, really digging Sharp Pins’ BALLOON X3 on K Records, which hits my Guided By Voices joy receptors bullseye.

Good mail day. Got the Vinegar Syndrome / Mélusine Black Friday sale films (of which I’ve seen TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE PART 2, THE STENDHAL SYNDROME and NEW ROSE HOTEL). I also got a lathe cut record with a demo from Eleanor Friedberger, her first new music in several years.

If any of you missed out on the Shout! UHD of HARD-BOILED, it’s probably a good idea to jump on the Arrow disc that was just announced (and will likely be the better choice anyways). It’s a limited edition and I bet it will sell out as well. It’s a UK release, the UHD disc will be region free.

Just found this at the local thrift store. Pretty crazy if it’s real, not sure why it would exist if it wasn’t real…

I’m confused about SIRÂT. Did it already come out for a limited run? Is it going to be released again? Twice this month I’ve been at an AMC and have been shown a trailer for it, but I don’t see any indication it is coming back. Anyone know?

Happy Josh O’Connor streaming weekend everyone. Wish REBUILDING had been added somewhere so it could have been a trifecta.

Where’d I get it: Estate sale

Why’d I get it: I like doo-wop and I didn’t have it. Good copy too

On Spotify: Yes

How many plays: 2

Verdict: Always thought of The Coasters as a singles band but this is pretty consistently great and wonderfully strange collection of songs. 9/10

Keep or sell: Keep
