In just the past couple of weeks, children as young as 2 have found guns and pulled the trigger, resulting in critical injuries and even death.

An off-duty sheriff’s deputy in Harris County, TX was asleep on a couch when his 3-year-old nephew found a loaded gun in a holster and discharged it, striking the deputy in the hand. Thankfully, the child was unharmed. buff.ly/YcdsEhm

Leaving a gun unattended, even for a very short time, can have devastating consequences. The most effective way to prevent children from accessing guns is making sure guns are always stored unloaded, locked, and separate from ammunition.

Recognizing the role of guns in suicide is critical, and it’s clear that means matter―among commonly used methods of self-harm, firearms are by far the most lethal.

Removing access to firearms is the one of the most important interventions adults can take to prevent suicide by children and teens.
