On 16 November 1935, Emile Francqui passed away. Few people have left such a significant mark on Belgian science. In the interwar period, he built an extensive network including the royal palace and established various scientific and financial organizations. In 1928, he helped found the FNRS.

Descartes woonde in Amsterdam toen hij rond 1630 zijn eigen theorie formuleerde over het ontstaan van een Aarde. Hij kende de manuscripten van Stevin bovendien. De Franse filosoof schetste schematisch hoe een planeet met aardlagen kon ontstaan. 8/9

In November 1915, the “emergency university” of Amersfoort closed — a Dutch university created for Belgian refugees during WO I. Its classes offered not just education, but also served a moral purpose and had to maintain a lasting bond with home.
