bear in mind, nowadays I complain that a laptop has "only" 100 megabit ethernet because that means I can "only" transfer ~10mb/s to or from it at once, now imagine 5 people having to use less than half that, all crowding the same SSID, and walls and signal strength being factors.
February 10, 2026 at 7:27 AM
i think i remember our internet connection being ~40 megabit, nominal

so combine the fact it was all 2.4GHz WiFi, with how many people were using it, with the inherent slowdown caused by WiFi over Ethernet and the suck of late 2000's satellite internet and you have misery
February 10, 2026 at 7:23 AM
if a sufficient cloud happened between this 20-acre property and space, your internet would just die, and I remember having to watch youtube on the Wii in 144p just to get smooth playback on the wifi connection, it was BAD.
February 10, 2026 at 7:15 AM
I had to deal with satellite internet in the mid-late 2000's because I lived in the middle of bum-fuck nowhere, it was absolutely miserable to deal with

but the guy could have owned most of his games on physical media and I just can't get access to the savegames because I can't open Settings right now, so when I get the gamepad I am DEFINITELY checking out the save data for more info on when the guy got the console
February 10, 2026 at 6:52 AM
so if I were to guess, the guy used the console for only up to 2 years because the WiiU launched in 2012, but since I have no evidence of any use from before 2014 (yet)...
February 10, 2026 at 6:52 AM
There's also one single game, Wii Sports Club (from the summer of 2014).

So that pretty conclusively tells me that thing hasn't been used in 12 years.
February 10, 2026 at 6:45 AM
so I just tried to see if I could access my WiiU's web browser without a Gamepad (the answer is no) and the browser was last on a pirate website trying to watch Guardians Of The Galaxy, meaning it's not been used since about the fall of 2014.

Digital archaeology right there.

You're forgiven for nerd, average mortar shell is ~80mm in diameter, and coming in at ~200-250m/s, and from a height of ~3km, the angular size to get within a reasonable range of a mortar shell is incredibly small, so the fact CRAM emplacements can even hit these things is frankly impressive
February 10, 2026 at 6:27 AM
the thing about the CRAM is that giant dome actually serves a function, that's a radar system and the thing can track every round it fires and adjust its aim accordingly, but mortar rounds and missiles are travelling very fast so you kind of need to saturate a target area to stop such a samll target
February 10, 2026 at 6:21 AM
I know for damn sure it's a lot less of a concern for a modern 20mm autocannon round exploding high up than, say, a WW2 heavy AA gun firing an 88mm round designed to produce shrapnel. I'd be more worried if the fuse failed on the 20mm round and potentially caused a UXO hazard.
February 10, 2026 at 6:18 AM
potentially, depending on the size and altitude and how astronomically unlucky someone was, but it's a hell of a lot less deadly than fully intact missiles and mortar bombs air-bursting directly over one's head.
February 10, 2026 at 6:15 AM
they don't land (not intact anyways if CRAM), they have a timed fuse and airburst because that's actually effective at AAA and anti-mortar work (what this is), CIWS uses APDS (which is essentially flechette rounds, but CIWS is used at sea).

it's not even interesting to pick apart anymore because everything they have to say is regurgitated garbage, like a fecal human centipede, but let's be honest, creationism and flat earth got that way too

transphobes be like "this video UTTERLY DESTROYS THE TRANS IDEOLOGY FOREVER!!1!!" and you watch it and it's just the same boring talking points that were debunked ten years ago or some analogy involving electrical plugs that only a 5yo would think is deep

not an original thought in their heads

i'm the type of person who will run a WiiU on composite video because the TV I'm playing on is this thing and it's legit easier to work with and saves me an external box
February 10, 2026 at 2:20 AM
flaming hot take for retro people apparently: The video quality of composite is perfectly fine, S-Video/Component isn't that big of a deal, and if you think an N64 NEEDS HDMI, I want whatever kind of pills you're on so I can escape this hellworld reality for an hour
