Finally made my account, introduction post time! I’ve been cosplaying since 2007. I used to compete, didn’t like how things were run so after running cosplay chess for six years I took on a role as a cosplay director, and became the positive change I wanted to see in the world.

Cosplay community. We need each other now more than ever. To stand together when outside forces would seek to put us against each other. There is so much good about this community, our diversity, our kindness, our ability to creatively problem solve. We are more than a negative algorithm.

During a time when so many players outside our community would seek to divide us, to have us at each other’s throats, remember to be kind to yourself and others. Try to put yourself in someone’s shoes before sending your thoughts out into the ether. Scream into the void and it might scream back. We need kindness now more than ever. That sense of belonging that so many of us threw ourselves into this hobby head first to gain. Connection through cosplaying, through art, can bring us together. Supporting each other. Communicating from a place of curiosity and kindness. You can have discourse and still be kind. You can have differences and still stand together against those that would do our community harm. 🏳️‍⚧️ 5 ways cons can support trans inclusion and safety 🏳️‍⚧️ It’s no accident that there are a lot of trans and gender diverse people in fandom spaces— and with growing threats to our safety (anti-trans laws and increased hate rhetoric) creating safer spaces has never been more important. Cons can play a huge role in this. Here’s how. Don’t require legal names on badges. Aside from being a privacy violation for everyone, for trans attendees who may not have the privilege of ID that aligns with their identity the broadcasting of a person’s legal name can out someone and jeopardize their safety. Make sure we can use the washroom. Audit your washroom situation. Inclusive washrooms? Single stalls? There is no one size fits all, but there needs to be a dialogue with your venue and communication of guidelines to attendees with the safety of trans people (the people most at risk) at the center.
