Today would’ve been Hank’s 15th Birthday. But he passed away a few weeks ago. He was a very good boy who lived a very long life: even when his mind and body would start to fall behind, he never lost his puppy spirit. Rest in Piece my Bud, I love you 🫡

I think a lot of Golden Receivers flaws lie in its desire to conform to dog movie trends.

You can really feel Buddy’s absence in this movie. The other dog actors are fine, but it’s really telling that they needed 5 dogs to do a worse job of what Buddy did by himself.

Air Bud 2 starts weening off towards the more standard “Kids Dog Movie” while Air Bud 1 tackles a lot of tough subjects for kids movies (mainly grief and abuse)

Air Bud 2 tries to do it all: cartoonish slapstick, over the top Russian villains, and touching moments about love and family.

Air Bud 1 is a beautifully charming movie. Especially rewatching in current year with all the AI generated garbage clouding online media, it’s nice to watch something that just feels authentic through and through.

Buddy the dog was a once in a lifetime talent, the screen presence is undeniable.

It’s one of those situations in the movie where the main character has to pick either the evil clone or their real friend. And they make them do a bunch of tests because “only the real one would know this”

The clone is really good at the tests and they can’t figure it out.

A beautiful moment where the clone comes out and tells the truth for their sake. And while expecting to get shot, they open their eyes to see arms wide open.

They feel the same way, they had found family. They didn’t even remember why they wanted to kill you in the first place.

So the main character decides to move in with both the clones, constantly holding both of them at gunpoint trying to figure it out, while also being a quirky sitcom family.

Eventually the clone realizes they’ve been pretending the whole time, but the friendships have been real this whole time.

I think a lot of people conflate the rise of regurgitated AI Wikipedia summaries with the overall quality of video essays as a whole. They don’t see new and interesting ideas as often because YouTube shoves low effort garbage in front of them.
