These are great lessons. My commute is 18km each way and I strongly agree with your "store heavy things at the office" lesson! I keep my laptop charger, change of clothes, etc. there along with a pile of snacks.

We're lucky that our city has a lot of good multi-use pathways and that we can bike safely for recreation. I'm taking the kids out for a ride today and who knows where we'll end up!

It looks to me like you're properly taking a lane when you need to to protect your space. I do the same thing on roads where I always get close passed
