Build. More. Protected. Bike lanes. That’s something that we should induce demand for the world over.

Cameras should be the backstop to road redesign. Here they are all we can hope for.

I hear you, but it doesn’t snow in the Bay Area. Also speed bumps are the lowest form of traffic calming. Plantings are where it’s at.

Well in my case they crossed right over the bright green, parking protected bike lane to get to a parking lot. It doesn’t matter what you do. Car drivers need to not injure and kill. Period.

Now let me tell you about the drivers…
bikingmzstacey.bsky.social
Agreed. But cameras should be the insurance after the road redesign. I’ll even take them before, but there is no appetite for the redesign so it is beyond frustrating.

I used to live/work there. I wasn’t a bike person back then. Please don’t critique them with your mouth full of takeout.

That’s my whole point. It’s the only tool in their toolbox.

Love that 15% for sidewalks and pedestrian paths…UNTIL the backlog of damaged sidewalks and pedestrian paths is eliminated. No plans to widen sidewalks. You know it’s going right into street paving. 🚗🚕🚙🛻

The cynic in me says that it is so they can dedicate more of their regular budget to supporting drivers.

Road redesign is more foolproof. I want them to lean on that as a primary and have cameras as a backup.
bikingmzstacey.bsky.social
As long as there are cutouts for bike lanes 😉

It’s wonderful. Really. But road diets and other physical limiters would be better - especially for people outside of cars.

Yes. Me too. And if an emergency vehicle is in an actual emergency with sirens and lights, needs to use it, I will hop right out of it because I can.

Make streets that it’s nearly impossible to speed upon. Have cameras to catch those that somehow do. Have a billion cameras. Seriously. I don’t care. But the goal must be street redesign. And that’s something SF rarely does.

I was *just yesterday* biking on a slow street (Page) when an ambulance got to use it. Pedestrians and bikes can easily jump out of the way when an emergency vehicle is coming through. Cars cannot. More slow/no car streets means faster passage in the case of an emergency.

If you think you’re safer with speed cameras than road redesign, think again.
🧵I see these people and many more when I bike the streets of SF.

If they don’t have plans and a timeline to change those roads, it’s just revenue. It *should* be the start of change, but they will simply hand wring and do lengthy expensive studies instead of making the streets safer and moving the camera to another intersection.
