This year brought me many things to be grateful for: Turned 36 in March & with this year of life I was able to get back to my routines: in the gym like I wanted to be & in the coffee shops to write like I needed to. A return to myself that led to gains in the gym & a defended dissertation. #blacksky

For our next unit, we’ll be looking at “Superman Smashes the Klan” by Gene Luen Yang with art by Gurihiru, where #Superman defends a Chinese immigrant family against the Ku Klux Klan, powerfully fighting against bigotry. #comicsstudies.
Had a blast at the Comic Studies Society Conference on last week! Received some helpful feedback and encouragement on my own thinking and writing and I’m feeling inspired and eager to keep writing! #css #comicstudies

The @sequentialscholars.bsky.social series of threads on Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru's "Superman Smashes the Klan" begins here, with an intro to the comic! #Superman #ComicsStudies
The 2019 series “Superman Smashes the Klan” by Gene Luen Yang with art by Gurihiru is loosely based on a 1946 storyline from the Superman radio show. In both stories, #Superman defends a Chinese immigrant family against the Ku Klux Klan, powerfully rejecting nativist bigotry. 1/9

Enjoyed my bonus trip to Houston. Back in NYC class on tomorrow!
That’ actually a great idea!
My syllabus getting done before the weekend that my semester starts. Go me!

Hundreds of L.A. landlords have hiked rents on desperate people fleeing the wildfires.

Landlords for at least 400 properties appear to have ignored the law and the warnings of California's Attorney General and illegally raised rents since the fires began.

Hundreds of L.A. landlords hike rents to capitalize on 'desperate' fire evacuees
Price hikes of more than 10% are illegal during a state of emergency. But that hasn't stopped landlords seeking to profit from the L.A.'s ongoing disaster.

“Words set things in motion. I've seen them doing it. Words set up atmospheres, electrical fields, charges. I've felt them doing it. Words conjure. I try not to be careless about what I utter, write, sing. I'm careful about what I give voice to.”

Zora Neale Hurston was born on this day, January 7, 1891. She died penniless on January 28, 1960 and was buried in an unmarked grave. This passage, from her famed 1937 novel, *Their Eyes Were watching God,* seems especially pertinent at this moment. 1/
