JAY KELLY is a deceptively slow-moving gentle comedy that hits harder than you might realise on a first watch. It doesn’t contain the visceral anger of Noah Baumbach’s MARRIAGE STORY: it’s melancholy & wistful, despite the brilliant cheesecake gags.

Watched #Tuner last night at the #LFF. You have to wrap your head around some outlandish plotting but Leo Woodall is very strong in the central role and it has a gonzo energy and dialogue with music reminiscent of Whiplash. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Absolutely loved Rian Johnson’s new #KnivesOut film #WakeUpDeadMan! Works as murder mystery and as social satire on Maga’s unfeeling religiosity. Josh O’Connor is fantastic as a young earnest priest and Daniel Craig is just a bloody good time.

Hands down my film of the year. Unrelentingly tense and frighteningly real. What would you do, as President, if the USA were under nuclear attack?

I also spent a lot of time thinking about how every mainstream UK critical voice is white. So this film made me very sad on a number of fronts.

I spent a lot of time thinking about other comedy capers set against the backdrop of violent white nationalism (eg O Brother). Love that film. Watched it from the comfort of safe complacency.

Okay. One Battle. An hour too long. Appreciated a lot of it in theory. Particularly the score and some of the performances (esp Regina Hall). I can see why every single reviewer loves it. But I found it unbearable to watch a comedy caper set against a backdrop of ICE raids.

Khartoum***** is a superb documentary telling the story of five of the 10 million Sudanese displaced by the latest military coup. Along the way, hear discussions of what Sudanese identity even is. Watch it at this year’s BFI #lff

Debut feature writer-director Zain Duraie's SINK*** is a beautifully acted film about a perilously unboundaried relationship between a mother and her mentally ill son in contemporary, middle-class Jordan. I found it somehow held me at a distance, but I admired it.

Writer-director Imran Perretta's #Ish is a beautifully made and emotionally searing coming-of-age drama set in Luton - a multicultural town that’s still facing the same racially motivated policing and tug of war for the souls of its teenage boys as it did when I was growing up in the 80s.

THE TRAVELERS***** is David Bingong's own journey from Cameroon to Spain, with a group of young men of courage, good humour, but fully aware of the risks. This is playing at the BFI #lff and is urgent and impressive - truly a film for our times.

LOVE, BROOKLYN** is a gentle earnest romantic dramedy with a side order of social commentary about gentrification.

The film washed over me like a warm breeze. Inconsequential and forgettable but not entirely unpleasant.

Celine Song's follow-up to her wildly, and rightly, praised debut feature PAST LIVES, MATERIALISTS, is a dud. It wasn't funny or romantic, it didn't have a lot of dramatic tension, and it casually used sexual assault as a plot device. Just no.

#TheLifeofChuck is a half a wry dystopian depiction of trying to live a banal life in climate ravaged America and half a weird montage of dance scenes. I didn’t get it at all. Part of the issue is that #TomHiddleston is himself a dancing meme so it takes you out of the story. Mark Hamill great tho’
