Republicans have been playing a sort of reactionary offense in the cultural debates since the 60s, and it's been a winning strategy.

The lack of a gag reflex is a prerequisite for membership in today's Republican party.

Meh. Probably because Nevada's poorly suited to solar (or wind).

Flawed messenger, but he's right! Honesty among Republicans is a rare quality, these days, and one to be encouraged.

He's more self aware than I had realized.

For years, I assumed that the post employed Marc with-a-c Thiessen as the comedy element on the editorial page.

This administration is perverts, grifters, and perverted grifters, all the way down.
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
Of course not! Dems have been "soft on crime" since the 60s, even as urban crime rates declined.

The Vietnam war (and 1 million dead Vietnamese) didn't prove they weren't "soft on Communism."

Reps know you can never convince the pathologically fearful that they're safe -- it's their ace card.

Much of airlines' profit comes from upgrades. They want anyone who can justify the expense to upgrade to a more comfortable, and far pricier, seat.

That upgrade business requires a baseline level of discomfort.

Reps started to tacitly solicit the votes of nutjobs and zealots with Goldwater's 1960 campaign.

And now, they own the party.
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
You can't appease zealots and tyrants. It always fails.

Ya'll, I can't. 😵‍💫

A different kind of #FAFO

It would be hilarious if we didn't have to share a planet with these imbeciles.

Presumably for the vampires, in case he needs to work late.

Thanks for sharing this clip - I hadn't seen it before.

^ Art is based on Morley Safer’s historic report for CBS News from Cam Ne, Vietnam, on August 5, 1965. Safer’s report, which included footage of US Marines using Zippo lighters to torch villagers’ homes, helped change the way the war was covered in the US:

That (historically defensible) accounting practice created some screwy incentives, obviously.

And, when the market went bad, lease rates fell ~70% pa for 2-3 years before stabilizing at ~30% pa. So, the 2-3% O&M fees on a 4-5 year old IRU exceeded the price of an annual lease.

It was so fun.

In the telecom bubble, long haul circuits were either leased for 1-3 years, or sold as indefeasible rights of use (IRUs), 10-20 year capitalized leases (with 2-3% annual O&M fees).

The seller got a lot of cash up front, and the buyer held the lease as an asset on their balance sheet.

You'd think it should also scare the crap out of the bond market... government income and expenditures determined on the whim of a addled narcissist with the attention span of a fruit fly.

It would matter if they were expected to produce real journalism at the new CBS News. But perhaps that isn't the objective?
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
Yup. I worked in telecom. I also wonder about the implications for the data center market. What will happen to data center rates if a vast amount of well appointed and connected sites write off their capex and set prices on the basis of Opex (as happened with transport networks)?
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
But it's certainly rewarding for members of DCs FCC Bar.
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
US telecom policy is the stuff of nightmares. Jurisdictions are fragmented between the FCC, state PUCs and local govts, and regulatory capture by the oligopolies is all but complete. Consequently, policy responses tend to be one off, disjointed, and to enrich the incumbents.

The long con never ends, does it? But the grift has metastasized, reaching a scale Ron Paul could never have imagined.

(But only if a Republican is president)

When the networks bubble burst, telecom vendors lost major customers, and the market was flooded with often unused equipment that often sold for under 10¢ per $1. I expect that AI hardware depreciates more rapidly (tell me if I'm wrong).

How much will Nvidia gear go for once the music stops?
bitemedeluxe.bsky.social
This is so beautiful.

Portland never stops being Portland.

Will the AI bubble still be inflating next year? When will the air go out, and will they then tell us to wait till 2029, that we'll really love what happens in 2029?
